By Evan, age 9.

We were in Astoria with the boat because we were getting ready to head up to the Puget Sound. One day, we drove across the bridge to visit my cousins. Driving to see them, we passed Fort Columbia and I wanted to go. So we decided to go. We came up with some questions to answer during our visit.

When was it built? 1896-1906, 10 years.

Did it ever work with cannons? Yes.

Did it defend the Columbia River? Yes.

Was there a defensive wall? No.

Did they have booby traps? No.

Did they have electricity? Yes.

Did they have roofs? Yes.

Who were they defending against? Enemy warships.

Did they have any pet birds? I don’t know.

What did they eat? Army-issue food and locally produced eggs, bread, veggies, milk, butter.

Do they have trees? Yes.

How many people were there? Greater population than nearby towns.

Does anybody still live there? Yes.

How many buildings were there? 24.
