We stayed at Breakwater Marina in Tacoma for a few nights after our stay at Blake Island. We had tried to get a slip reservation to go hang out with our friends at Foss Harbor Marina, but they didn’t have any slips available. As it was, the slip that we got at Breakwater Marina was the only slip available.

The marina definitely wasn’t as upscale as Elliot Bay Marina, but it was clear that management was trying hard to keep it up while, presumably, working on a tight budget. The marina staff, especially Becky that we dealt with on the phone and several times in person, was SUPER friendly and offered lots of help with anything we could need.

Breakwater Marina Amenities

The slips at the marina we nice, though the finger docks were pretty narrow and a little wobbly so we had to remind the kids to be careful. The main docks, not the fingers, were stable though and well maintained.

Breakwater Marina in Tacoma is a pretty small marina and they just have a couple bathroom stalls, a single shower stall (great water pressure, very nice shower), and two washers and two dryers where you can do your laundry for $5 per load, paid at the office on the honor system.

They had a pump-out cart system but it was not functioning when we were there. I believe there is a public pump-out dock nearby though at the Tacoma Public Dock near the ferry terminal.

We did have a really hard time in regard to cell signal at this marina. We work remotely from the boat and have options for internet with Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T and we could barely manage to work on the signal from the AT&T wifi pack. The other two, including our phones (which we used for Uber a couple times while there), barely functioned at all at this marina.

Nearby Attractions

We enjoyed walking along the beach pathway from the marina west toward Ruston Point, past the ferry terminal. It’s always entertaining to watch the ferries come and go.

There’s also an Anthony’s restaurant there on the waterfront and, just up the hill, a nice little cafe type restaurant called the Antique Sandwich Company that offers superb hand-blended milkshakes. We got them two days in a row.

Overall, this marina is definitely nice enough for a quick stay but we won’t be able to visit often due to the poor cell signal for working.

They’ve definitely got us watching for another visit to the area at least once more though because the large kid’s attraction, Chutes and Ladders, was still under construction when we were there. It was scheduled to open the following week … which was a huge bummer for the kids. They’re DYING to go back.
