After we dropped Scott off to fly home, we left Puerto Escondido and headed back south toward Aqua Verde where we planned to meet back up with some friends on SV Foreigner.

But, when we pulled into Aqua Verde, there were 8 boats already anchored in there and we didn’t feel like we were going to be able to get tucked into a good spot for decent protection from the swell coming into the anchorage. So, instead of staying at Aqua Verde, we popped around the corner about 5 miles further south and we were the only boat to anchor in beautiful Bahia San Marte.

This bay was easy to anchor in (just be sure to MIND THE REEF as you approach the anchorage!) and is reportedly often-overlooked by cruisers that favor the popular Aqua Verde anchorage a few miles to the north.

But this spot stole my heart – easily one of my favorite anchorages that we visited this year. The place is comfortable, stunningly gorgeous, peaceful, and there’s plenty to explore as you walk either way along the beach and rocky shoreline.

There are fantastic shells and other natural pieces of art along the shoreline. We also walked around the eastern point of land and we were enthralled by the rock formations and the remote feel of the sea in that spot. It was SO cool.

We only stayed a few nights here. The kid boats and a strong northerly system beckoned us back into Aqua Verde. I hope that we get a chance to visit San Marte again. Don’t skip it, if you’re passing by! ~Rachel
